Easing Back into Life After COVID

We invited Aura Maria Huot to our IG live to chat about how to ease back into “normal” life after COVID. Aura is an HR business partner from Lactalis US Yogurt, Inc. and an avid runner. She shared the following tips with us.

Be patient with yourself and others.

Many people have been locked down in their homes for the past year and are eager to resume “normal” life. But life has changed and the “normal” of the past may not be the future. We all need to relearn what life will look like.

Be flexible with yourself and others.

Maybe you are trying to develop a new routine or schedule, but things keep popping up. It’s okay. We’re all learning how to get back into the swing of things! 

Be mindful of your time and set goals for yourself to stay motivated.

Be clear on your goals and the dates by which you want to achieve them. Don’t be so strict on your deadline. If you have to move your deadline, it’s okay. Break your goal down into smaller, more manageable pieces so that it doesn’t feel so overwhelming.

Have a routine and a schedule.

This holds true for a morning routine, if you are trying to fit in more exercise, or a nightly routine, if you need to fit in more sleep.

Having a repeatable routine and schedule will help train your body when it’s time to wake up and when it’s time to go to bed.

Ease into your new routine– especially for physical activity.

If you’ve missed out on the gym for the last year, be gentle on yourself when you go back so that you don’t get injured. If you’re finding it difficult to get motivated to get back to working out, take one small step at a time. 

For one week, maybe you wake up and put your gym clothes on and fill your water bottle. The following week, you do the same but add a 5-minute walk around your block. The following week, maybe you do the same plus you add a quick workout found on YouTube. 

Small, incremental steps will help you get to where you want to be without getting injured and without feeling frustrated when you can’t jump right into something.

Stay hydrated and take time to eat.

With COVID, a lot of people are sitting at their desks all day and working non-stop. One step that I have taken with my team is to block off one hour for lunch on our calendars. It’s not mandatory, but I do highly recommend that they take a break. I also provide half-day Fridays on a rotating basis. My team really looks forward to those half-days and getting a little bit longer of a weekend to rest and rejuvenate. 

Make sure you take the time to drink water too. Set reminder alarms in your phones if you need to so that you don’t forget to drink more often. Buy a cute water bottle that you enjoy drinking out of. Whatever you need to do!

Don't start off the day with social media.

Use the time after you wake up to drink water and rehydrate yourself, sit in silence, read, write, or another calming activity. Do NOT start your day off with social media. Turning your cellphone on in the morning and immediately browsing social media is a good way to start on a negative note right from the get-go.

Continue to take care of your mental health.

If this is something you weren’t doing before, but you had to put a little more emphasis on it to get through COVID, keep doing this! Whether it’s a new therapist you found, a mid-day walk to help clear your mind, or whatever works for you, keep doing that!

Connect, connect, connect!

Reach out to people. Check on them. See how they’re doing. See if they want to get together. You never know who just needs a simple “hello!” to get them out of a rut.

It’s been a rough year for everyone. People are eager to get out of the house and socialize. Enjoy your time with loved ones and friends you haven’t seen in a while.
